William IV of Nevers
William IV (French Guillaume ) (* around 1130; † October 24, 1168 ) was a Count of Nevers , Auxerre and Tonnerre from the House of Monceaux . He was a son of Count Wilhelm III. von Nevers and his wife Ida von Sponheim.
Wilhelm was knighted in 1159. Count Stephan I von Sancerre and Renaud von Joigny allied against him , but Wilhelm was able to defeat his opponents in a battle on April 15, 1163.
In 1168 he led a crusade army to Palestine . King Amalrich I of Jerusalem took his arrival as an opportunity to start a campaign against Egypt , which all Christian forces with the exception of the Knights Templar joined. Wilhelm himself could no longer take part in the campaign because he died beforehand. He was buried in Bethlehem . Most of his knights, who were probably responsible for the massacre of the people of Bilbeis, fought for this.
Since 1164 Wilhelm was married to Eleonore von Vermandois († 1213), a daughter of Count Rudolf I of Vermandois . Since they had no children, his brother Guido succeeded him in the government of Nevers.
