The establishment was founded by Wilhelm Pohl Sr., who opened a wholesale toy store in Mariahilfer Strasse 5 in 1854 and was able to achieve great success through commercial supervision and business acumen. A Viennese citizen, he knew how to deal properly with his customers, recognized the taste of his customers and then chose his goods in stock. Since the business in its old form became bigger and more important, after the death of Wilhelm Pohl sen. his son Wilhelm Pohl jun. in 1893 to remodel the outdated rooms. On the same site, he had a modern house built for the time with large business premises and opened a retail shop, as its furnishings and the purchase of goods corresponded to the conditions at the time.

The young business owner devoted great interest to the increasingly important sport, so that the Wilhelm Pohl company was considered the first source of supply for sport games and props in leading social circles. Not only the upper middle class and the nobility were customers, but also the imperial court was supplied. For these services and because of the high quality of the goods, Wilhelm Pohl jun. in 1898 the Hoflieferantentitel granted and his company was allowed to "kuk court-sporting goods and toys house" call. In the same year a branch was opened at Kärntner Strasse 39 in Vienna's 1st district. This was generously equipped with large sales rooms and a selection of toys and sports games.

At the same time, Wilhelm Pohl recognized the great boom in toys during the years, which have changed significantly over the decades between the founding time and later. While in the past only simple toys were created, later children were given gifts with complex features and there was hardly an invention in practical life that was not also applied to toys.

The stately business premises of the Wilhelm Pohl company could be ranked among the sights of Vienna, because the things on display were not only a joy for the children, but also for adults. According to Wilhelm Pohl jun. his partner Hans Ehrlich was the boss until the 1920s.
