Wilhelm Richter (sculptor)

Wilhelm Richter (born in 1599 / 1600 in Bielefeld , county Ravensberg ; buried 22. September 1667 in Gdansk , Polish Prussia ) was a German sculptor in Gdansk.

Life

Wilhelm Richter was an employee of Abraham van den Blocke . In 1628, after his death, he married the widow Elisabeth, née Kramer, and took over the workshop. He lived on the Holzmarkt, and his place of work was on the neighboring coal market .

In 1629 Richter received citizenship in Danzig after his masterpiece. Between 1630 and 1660 he was mostly a member of the city's masons, stonemasons and sculptors guild, and for a few years also chaired it. He had over 30 students and around 60 employees, including Andreas Schlueter .

Wilhelm Richter died in 1667 at the age of 67 and was buried on September 22nd at the Marienkirche .

Work (selection)

Wilhelm Richter first completed some of the works by Abraham van den Blocke , including the Neptune Fountain in Danzig, which was erected in 1634. He then created, among other things, stone carvings on the Jakobstor (1636, individual elements preserved elsewhere) and the portal of the right- wing town hall (1645, not preserved), as well as tombs and epitaphs, some altars and other works in Gdansk and other places.
