Right town hall
The right town hall ( Polish: Ratusz Głównego Miasta ) is located in Gdansk in the district of Rechtstadt . This is the actual city center and older than the old town of Gdańsk with the old town hall . Located at the end of Langgasse , the right town hall also has a dominant location on the Long Market .
history
At the turn of the 13th to the 14th century , a forerunner building was built as the Hansekontor , which was rebuilt in 1327 on the current floor plan. The town hall tower was built by Heinrich Hetzel from 1486 to 1488. After a fire in 1556, the originally Gothic town hall was rebuilt in the Mannerist style and the town hall tower received a new spire , which in 1561 was adorned with a gilded statue of King Sigismund II August as a weather vane . The filigree tower also houses a clockwork with a 14-part carillon , which was created by Johann Moor from 's-Hertogenbosch between 1559 and 1562 . The 81 meter high tower offers a wide view of the city.
After the worst destruction at the end of the Second World War , the town hall was rebuilt by 1970. Today it houses the City Museum (Muzeum Gdańska) .
Furnishing
Today's interior was created around the turn of the 16th to the 17th century and was already considered one of the most beautiful of its kind when it was built. Many famous artists, builders and blacksmiths were currently involved in the magnificent buildings in Gdansk, B. Wolff Sporer, Valentin Trost, Ambrosius Kleppisch, Lonhardt Diele, Adam Reißig, Leonhardt Schulz, Andreas Stange, Jacob Apotheker, master builder Hans Strakowski and his son Georg, master Simon Sperling, etc. Interesting is the Red Hall from 1593 to 1608 with one Ceiling of 25 paintings by Izaak van den Blocke , framed in carvings by Abraham Hochreuter. When one enters the hall, one notices the great abundance of works of art in the relatively small room. The painting in the center is called the Allegory of Gdańsk Trade or Apotheosis of Gdańsk's Alliance with Poland . The oldest element of the purple hall is the chimney with the coat of arms of Gdańsk. Like other works of art inside the town hall, most of the furnishings in the red hall were outsourced before the war and could be used again during the reconstruction.
