Wilhelm Scheffler

Wilhelm Scheffler (born January 21, 1847 in Dalheim, today Roschtschino (Kaliningrad, Gurjewsk) , † April 15, 1913 in Dresden ) was a German Romance writer and stenographer .

life and work

Scheffler graduated from high school in Königsberg . From 1867 he studied at the Universities of Königsberg and Breslau. In 1870 he was an interpreter and stenographer during the Franco-Prussian War . In 1871 he became a member of the Stenographic Institute in Dresden and stenographer at the Saxon State Parliament. He received his doctorate in Rostock in 1873 with the work Essai sur Ronsard et sa réforme littéraire (Dresden 1874) and habilitated in 1875 with the work Étude littéraire sur Boileau-Despréaux, sa vie et ses écrits (Posen 1876). In 1876 he became a private lecturer for French language and literature at the Polytechnic School (from 1890 Technical University ) in Dresden. From 1885 he was an associate professor there, and from 1890 until his death a full professor of French language and literature. In 1909 he founded the technical language seminar. He was the editor of numerous school editions of French classics and playwrights.

Scheffler was a city councilor in Dresden and, in 1878, a founding member of the literary association. In 1878 he founded the Dresden Society for Modern Philology.
