Wilhelm Schmid (Major)
Wilhelm Schmid (born March 5, 1858 in Bern ; † September 11, 1939 there ) was a Swiss colonel division .
Life
Wilhelm Schmid was the son of a Bernese goldsmith . After attending secondary school , he studied chemistry and physics at the University of Bern . At the beginning of his studies he joined the Corps Rhenania Bern , which accepted him in 1876. In 1882 he was promoted to Dr. phil. II PhD .
Schmid then embarked on a career as an instruction officer in the Swiss Army . From 1884 to 1890 he was secretary to the chief of arms of the artillery . In 1890 he was appointed instructor of the cavalry and in 1893 of the artillery. From 1900 to 1909 he was chief instructor of the artillery and from 1910 to 1912 chief of weapons in the artillery. In 1913 he became commander of the 4th Division . He was in command until 1918.
Schmidt's military merits were the improvement of the organization, training and equipment of the artillery. He played a key role in the introduction of guns with a barrel return . He was considered an exemplary leader.
