Theophore Wilhelm Dittenberger

Wilhelm Theophor Dittenberger (born April 30, 1807 in Teningen , † May 1, 1871 in Weimar ) was a German theologian.

Dittenberger was born the son of a pastor and studied theology at the University of Heidelberg under Karl Daub , his future father-in-law. Together with Philipp Konrad Marheineke , he published his work from 1838–1843. He continued his studies at the University of Halle and went on study trips that took him to almost all universities in Germany and Denmark.

In 1833 he completed his habilitation in Heidelberg, where in 1838 he was appointed associate professor and teacher at the newly opened seminary. At the same time he took over the position of the second university preacher as well as the parish administrator at the Heilig-Geist-Kirche . Dittenberger was one of the leaders of liberal Protestantism in Baden. Together with Karl Zittel , he published the magazine for German Protestant church constitution , which was considered the organ of liberal Protestantism. Among other things, he also headed the Baden General Synod in 1843 and the Gustav Adolf Association of the Baden Regional Church . From 1847 he was full professor of theology at Heidelberg University.

In 1852 he accepted the call to Weimar as a grand ducal court preacher and councilor. In 1854 Dittenberger was one of the founders of the "Protestant Church Newspaper for Protestant Germany" .

From the marriage with Wilhelmine Marie, geb. Daub (1802-1870), had four sons, including the classical philologist Wilhelm Dittenberger . His only daughter Emilie (1841–1901) married the mathematician Heinrich Weber .
