Wilhelmus à Brakel

Wilhelmus à Brakel (born January 2, 1635 in Leeuwarden , † October 30, 1711 in Rotterdam ) was a Reformed clergyman in the tradition of the Near Reformation . His father Theodorus Gerardus à Brakel was also a preacher.

He became known through his book De Redelijke Godsdienst (German: The sensible church service), which was written for normal churchgoers without great obstacles to understanding. The Redelijke Godsdienst is characterized by its many applications for personal life. In addition to dogmatic topics, Brakel covers topics such as gratitude, the singing of psalms and Christian humility.

Due to its easy understanding, the book had a great influence on the right wing of Protestantism . The book is still read today by members of various Calvinist communities in the Netherlands . Another reprint appeared around 2000.

à Brakel died in Rotterdam in 1711 and was buried there on November 5th of the same year. He had a daughter.
