Will Friedwald (* 1961 ) is an American jazz critic, author and producer.

Life

Will Friedwald has been a jazz critic for Downbeat , Jazz Times , and Jazz News since the 1980s and works as a freelance record producer in New York. He has also written for newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times , The Village Voice , Newsday , The New York Observer and The New York Sun, as well as for magazines such as Entertainment Weekly, Oxford American, New York , Mojo, BBC Music Magazine, Stereo Review , Fi (Delity) and other music and film magazines. He is also the author of several books on jazz history, particularly the history of the Great American Songbook ; in Germany his work Swinging Voices of America - A Compendium of Great Voices by Hannibal was published in 1992 . His biography of Frank Sinatra was awarded the 1996 Deems Taylor Award of ASCAP excellent. Together with Friedwald, Tony Bennett brought out his autobiography The Good Life in 1998 . Friedwald - described as " The Poet Laureate of vintage pop music " - works with one of the most comprehensive databases; he has over 200,000 songs on his Power Mac G5 .
