Willem B. Stern

Willem B. Stern (born December 2, 1938 in Amsterdam ) is emeritus associate professor at the University of Basel . His areas of expertise are geochemistry and archaeometry .

Life

Stern attended schools in Basel and studied at the universities of Basel, Bern and Zurich . Doctorate in 1965, one year later he worked at the Mineralogical and Petrographic Institute of the University of Basel. In 1973 he qualified as a professor at the University of Basel and in 1983 he was awarded an a. o. Professor appointed.

Stern specialized in analytical geochemistry and archaeometry, an interdisciplinary area between the natural sciences and the humanities, and was on the road in several countries (Brazil, India, Madagascar, Mongolia) until his retirement in 2003. He worked as a reviewer for domestic and foreign institutions. Together with colleagues he published works on the application of instrumental analysis methods in the fields of archaeometry (glass, ceramics, metals), gemology, geochemistry, medicine, mineralogy , clay mineralogy , environmental sciences. One focus was the development of non-destructive analysis methods. Stern was a member of national and international scientific societies and for 25 years a board member of the university dormitory. Stern is a member of the Swiss Chamber of Technical and Scientific Court Experts.
