A flower still life by Willem Hekking

Willem Hekking (born March 24, 1796 in Amsterdam , † May 20, 1862 there ) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Hekking was born in Amsterdam in 1796 as the son of the wallpaper painter Theodorus Hekking (1766–1819), who is documented as a member of the St. Luke's Guild from 1793 and who created landscapes, architecture and cityscapes. Willem Hekking was a student of Anthonij van den Bosch. At first, like his father, he worked as a wallpaper painter, but later turned to ink and watercolor painting as well as drawing with a pen. In exhibitions in Amsterdam and Rotterdam from 1813 to 1838 he mainly showed still lifes of flowers and fruits. Marina Adriana Maria van Toulon and Anna Maria Veeren were among his students. His son Willem Hekking Junior (1825-1904) was a lithographer, draftsman and painter who also worked mainly in Amsterdam. He also painted pieces of flowers and fruit and other still lifes, but also city and river views and church interiors.
