Willem Kroesbergen

Willem Kroesbergen (born June 5, 1943 in Utrecht ) is a Dutch harpsichord maker.

life and work

Willem Kroesbergen was born in Utrecht in 1943. He studied psychology at the University of Utrecht . During his student years he built a virginal . He later specialized in making replicas of historical instruments. Instruments from the Ruckers family served as models for him. After completing his studies, he built harpsichords for over forty years. In 2007, Kroesbergen retired from making harpsichords and moved to Cape Town , South Africa. There he tries to reconstruct the original piano and harpsichord tunings and temperatures in Johann Sebastian Bach's time.

Kroesbergen's instruments have an excellent sound and outstanding structural quality. They were regularly used in concerts by soloists such as Ton Koopman and Masaaki Suzuki as well as by groups such as the Bach Collegium Japan and the Musica Antiqua Köln .

In 1991 Kroesbergen received the Casper Hogenbijl Prize for his contribution to making harpsichord to early music.
