Willem de Witt

Willem de Witt (born April 13, 1516 in Dordrecht , † August 23, 1596 ibid) was a Dordrecht patrician and regent. He came from the De Witt family .

biography

Willem's parents were Jan de Witt († 1565), Schepen von Dordrecht, and Klara van Beveren . Willems political role began after the Geusen uprising in 1572. He was introduced as Schepen in the Dordrecht municipal government the following year. His first appointment as mayor took place in 1582. He held other offices in 1583, 1586, 1589 and 1590. At that time he was councilor of William I of Orange .

Willem's marriage to Maria van Wezel had nine children.

The three sons

  • Thomas de Witt (1548–1601), Mayor of Dordrecht and Deputy of the States of Holland and Friesland,
  • Nicolaas de Witt (1553–1621), councilor and Schepen of Dordrecht and
  • Johan de Witt (1567–1625), Schepen and treasurer of the city of Dordrecht,

founded three further branches of the family which were not of great political importance. Rather, the branch, descended from Willems nephew Frans de Witt (1516–1565) , was able to gain great political influence over the government of Dordrecht, Holland and the Republic during the Dutch Golden Age .
