Willi Baumgart

Willi Baumgart (* July 24, 1903 ; † May 22, 1975 in East Berlin ) was a German trade unionist ( FDGB ) and SED functionary. From 1949 to 1958 he was Secretary General of the IVG Public Services .

Life

Baumgart learned the profession of lathe operator after attending primary school . In 1930 he became a member of the KPD . After Hitler came to power in 1933, he did resistance work.

After the Second World War he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and the FDGB and became a party and trade union official. He first worked in the Berlin SED operating group for post and telecommunications and trained speakers . He was then deputy chairman of the Central Works Council for Post and Telecommunications in the Soviet Zone of Occupation .

As a member of the central board of the Post and Telecommunications Industry Union, he was elected on October 29, 1949 at the founding meeting of the International Union of Trade Unions (IVG) of post, telegraph, telephone and radio workers in Berlin as a member of the standing committee and general secretary of the IVG . At the 3rd FDGB Congress in September 1950, he was elected to the FDGB Federal Executive. At the first International Conference of Workers in the Public Service and Related Professions in Berlin in April 1955, he was finally elected Secretary General of the IVG for the Public Service and Related Professions. He held this position until 1958. Baumgart was later head of the main telegraph office in Berlin with the rank of senior councilor .

Baumgart died at the age of 71 and was buried in the Baumschulenweg cemetery.
