William Barclay Peat

Sir William Barclay Peat (* 1852 in Scotland ; † 1936 in Totteridge , England ) was a Scottish entrepreneur and owner of William Barclay Peat & Company in London , which later became part of today's KPMG .

Peat comes from a wealthy Scottish family ( Barclays Bank, now the third largest financial institution in Great Britain) and was able to study law at the Montrose Academy. However, before completing his studies in 1870, at the age of 17, he moved to London to work as an assistant in an accounting company. At the age of only 24 he became a partner there, and in 1891 he became sole managing director. The company was now called William Barclay Peat & Company.

In 1911, Peats William Barclay Peat & Co. and Marwick Mitchell & Co. merged by James Marwick . The new company later became known as Peat Marwick International (PMI) and merged in 1986 with the German-Dutch Klynveld Main Goerdeler (KMG) as part of the first mega-merger among the large audit firms to form today's KPMG .

In 1912 Peat was knighted as a Knight Bachelor .

Sir William Barclay Peat was married to Edith Roberts († 1929) and has six children. His grandchild Sir Michael Peat later worked for KPMG for a total of five years and is now the personal secretary of the British heir to the throne, Charles Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince of Wales . Previously, he was Queen Elizabeth II's Treasurer at Buckingham Palace .
