William Beinart (born January 19, 1951 in Cape Town ) is a South African historian and Africanist . He taught at Bristol University from 1983 to 1997 and at Oxford University from 1997 . His focus areas include South Africa and the development of racism .

In 2009 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy .
