William Bennett (oboist)

William Bennett (born May 31, 1956 in New Haven , Connecticut , † February 28, 2013 in San Francisco , California ) was an American oboist .

Life

Bennett studied at the Juilliard School in New York City and at Yale University in his native New Haven, where his father, William R. Bennett taught as a renowned professor of physics.

In 1979 he was hired as second oboist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra ; From 1987 until his death he was principal oboist there. In 1992 he performed the world premiere of the oboe concerto by John Harbison (* 1938), which was composed for him and which he performed with the orchestra in many countries. In September 2004, Bennett was diagnosed with cancer of the throat, the treatment of which forced him to take several months off.

Bennett suffered a stroke on February 23, 2013 while he was performing Richard Strauss' oboe concerto , from the consequences of which he died a few days later.
