William Buckler (born September 13, 1814 in Newport , Isle of Wight , † January 9, 1884 in Lumley near Emsworth ) was a British entomologist and painter .

Life

Buckler studied at the Royal Academy and exhibited 62 pictures from 1836 to 1856, mostly portraits in watercolor. From 1848 he lived in Emsworth and engaged in entomology as a hobby. He wrote and photographed for Entomologists Weekly Intelligencer and Entomologists Monthly Magazine . By 1873 he made around 5000 drawings of the larvae of butterflies (around 850 species) in various stages. He did not collect himself (his eyesight was not good enough and he drew with the help of magnifying glasses), but received the copies from his friend, the entomologist and clergyman John Hellins (1829–1887). In old age he learned German in order to correspond with German entomologists.

His drawings of butterfly larvae appeared in 9 volumes in the Ray Society.
