William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington

William John Robert Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington (born December 10, 1917 , † September 10, 1944 in Belgium ) was a British aristocrat who gained particular fame as the husband of John F. Kennedy's sister Kathleen .

Life

He was the eldest son of Edward Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire , and Mary Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire . Since his father had inherited the title of Duke of Devonshire in 1937, he led as his title heir ( Heir apparent ) the courtesy title of Marquess of Hartington .

On May 6, 1944, Cavendish married the American Kathleen Agnes Kennedy , against the wishes of his mother-in-law Rose , who thus became the Marchioness of Hartington .

He served with the rank of major in the Coldstream Guards during World War II . About four months after the wedding, Cavendish died during heavy fighting in Heppen , Belgium, from a projectile fired by a sniper of the Waffen SS . The title of his father was not inherited by William, but by his younger brother Andrew Cavendish .
