Marshall was born in Mayfair , London in 1849 . Actually a real tennis player, he competed in the first tournament at Wimbledon. He had a bye in the semi-finals and then faced Spencer Gore in the final . While Marshall was playing from the baseline, Gore stormed to the net, from where he parried Marshall's balls with a volley and thus secured victory. Gore eventually won 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4.
Marshall took part in the Wimbledon Championships again in 1879 and lost there in the round of 16 against eventual winner John Hartley .
