William Chandler Roberts-Austen

Sir William Chandler Roberts-Austen (born March 3, 1843 in Kennington , Surrey , † November 22, 1902 in London ) was a British metallurgist who is particularly known for his research on the physical properties of metals and their alloys .

Life

As a professor of metallurgy at the Royal School of Mines , he developed methods for determining alloying elements. The pyrometer he developed was particularly important for modern industry , with the help of which one can make precise temperature measurements in the high temperature range .

In honor of William Chandler Roberts-Austen, the γ mixed crystals of iron are called austenite .
