William Creek is a small settlement in South Australia . It is 204 kilometers north of Marree and 168 kilometers east of Coober Pedy on the Oodnadatta Track , which runs parallel to the Stuart Highway .

William Creek was named in 1859 by the explorer John McDouall Stuart after the second son of the pioneer and partner John Chambers, William.

Although the village only had five residents when it was counted in 2002, it is still of greater importance to the region, as William Creek has the only gas station between Marree , Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta . Furthermore, William Creek offers a hotel, a landing strip for small planes, on which z. B. the Royal Flying Doctors can land, a pub and a campsite. The pub is known for its original interior design - many travelers left their ID cards, student IDs, driver's licenses, business cards, underwear or other items of clothing there that were hung up throughout the pub. William Creek is located on the area of the world's largest cattle ranch, Anna Creek Station . The former nuclear weapons test area Woomera Prohibited Area begins just a few kilometers to the west . Flights to Anna Creek Painted Hills are available from William Creek . William Creek also owns Australia's first public solar-powered telephone.

The city was once on the old railway line The Ghan , although it was never bigger than it is now.
