William Edgcumbe (politician, 1794)
William Richard Edgcumbe, Viscount Valletort (born November 19, 1794 - † October 29, 1818 ) was a British politician who was elected twice as a member of the House of Commons .
origin
William Edgcumbe came from the English noble family Edgcumbe . He was the eldest son of Richard Edgcumbe and his wife Sophia Hobart . After his father inherited the title of Earl of Mount Edgcumbe in 1795 , William carried the courtesy title of Viscount Valletort . From 1804 to 1810 he attended Harrow School .
Political activity
When Edgcumbe came of age, he became a lieutenant colonel in command of the East Cornwall militia in 1815. After Reginald Pole-Carew , one of the two previous MPs from Lostwithiel , had resigned his mandate, Edgcumbe was elected in a by-election on March 26, 1816 as the new MP of the borough , in which his father had considerable political influence. In the House of Commons he supported the government of Lord Liverpool , among other things with a lengthy speech at the opening of parliament on January 28, 1817. As Tory , he voted on May 9, 1817 against a law for the emancipation of Catholics . In the general election in 1818 Edgcumbe ran for Borough Fowey . Despite local support, however, he lost the election to George Lucy , a candidate for Prime Minister Lord Liverpool. Edgcumbe then turned to the Petitions Committee, but died before a decision could be made on the election.
Since he had remained unmarried, his younger brother Ernest became her father's heir.
