William Gale
William Gale (* 1823 in London ; † 1909 ibid) was an English painter and etcher .
William Gale entered the London Academy in 1841 and received three medals for his first historical genre paintings over the next few years. For his further training he stayed in Rome in 1851 and 1852 , toured Palestine and Syria in 1862 and 1867 , Switzerland in 1871 and 1872 and Algeria in 1876 and 1877 .
From all these trips he brought home a large number of sketches, which he then knew how to use for his later oil paintings . There are religious and profane images, genre pieces, landscapes and portraits . Among the former, which show a sublime conception and characteristic as well as a brilliant coloring, the most important are: The place of mourning of the Jews in Jerusalem (1862), The entry into Jerusalem (1867), The return of the prodigal son (1869), Abraham with Isaac On the Way to Sacrifice (1872) and The Rejection of Hagar (1873).
There are also fine and delicate genre images: The little grandmother , The father's blessing , The banishment , The eyes of the blind (1873), The spring in the Orient (1874), The bankruptcy test (1875), The chess players , The love story (1876) , The spoils of war and an interior in Algiers .
