William Keith, 3rd Earl Marischal (1506 - October 7, 1581 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the son of Robert Keith, Master of Marischal († 1524/25), and Lady Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of John Douglas, 2nd Earl of Morton . At the death of his paternal grandfather, William Keith, 2nd Earl Marischal , 1527, he inherited his title Earl Marischal and the subordinate title Lord Keith . The hereditary court office of the Marshal of Scotland was also connected with the title .

In 1541, 1561 and 1573 he held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session , i.e. a lay judge at the Court of Session , and became a member of the Scottish Privy Council .

In 1547 he fought in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh , in which the Scots were defeated by the English .

Since he survived his eldest son William, his only son George Keith (1553-1623) inherited him in 1581 as 4th Earl Marischal.

Marriage and offspring

In June 1538 at the latest he had married Margaret Keith, daughter of William Keith, Younger of Inverugie (⚔ 1513 at Flodden ). He had nine children with her:

  • Lady Mary Keith, ⚭ John Campbell, 3rd Laird of Cawdor († 1591);
  • Lady Beatrice Keith († 1596), ⚭ John Allardyce of Allardyce (around 1541 – around 1606);
  • Lady Elizabeth Keith, ⚭ Alexander Irvine, 8th Laird of Drum († 1603);
  • Lady Johanna Keith, ⚭ Sir James Crichton of Frendraught (around 1541–1612);
  • Robert Keith, 1st Lord Altrie (around 1529–1596), ⚭ Elizabeth Lundie;
  • Lady Margaret Keith († 1620) ⚭ Sir Robert Arbuthnott of that Ilk (before 1574–1631).
