William Keith, 2nd Earl Marischal (* before 1467, † 1527 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the son of William Keith, 1st Earl Marischal and Margaret Erskine, daughter of Thomas Erskine, 2nd Lord Erskine . When his father died in 1483, he inherited his title Earl Marischal and the subordinate title Lord Keith . The hereditary court office of the Marshal of Scotland was also connected with the title .

As early as March 18, 1482, he first took part in the Scottish Parliament as Master of Keith .

In 1488 he supported King James III. on the creation of an army to fight the rebellious barons, who had his young heir to the throne James, Duke of Rothesay , later James IV., in their power. Even after Jacob III. was killed in June 1488 in the Battle of Sauchieburn , he remained loyal to its party and in 1489 he fought in southern Scotland together with the Master of Huntly and Lord Forbes the new government under James IV until he was in October 1489 in the Battle of Talla Moss was defeated.

He was later able to be pardoned and win back the favor of Jacob IV. In 1501 he was in command of a Scottish army that fought insurgent clans in the Highlands . On October 15, 1504, he received and entertained the king at his family seat at Dunnottar Castle . In 1510 he took part in the Parliament of Jacob IV in Edinburgh .

From 1517 to 1520 he was, together with Lord Borthwick and Lord Ruthven , guardian of the underage King James V , while his regent John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany was in France.

On November 24, 1526 he was seriously ill. He died on May 2, 1527 at the latest. Since he survived his eldest son Robert, his eldest son William Keith (1506–1581) inherited him as 3rd Earl Marischal.

Marriage and offspring

By marriage contract of January 11, 1482, he married Lady Elizabeth Gordon, third daughter of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly . He had eleven children with her:
