William Kelly (politician, 1840)
William Kelly (* 1840 in County Louth , Ireland , † September 19, 1907 ) was an Irish migrant worker in New Zealand who was active as a businessman , soldier and politician .
Early years
William Kelly was born in Ireland in 1840 and immigrated to New Zealand as a young man in 1863. In 1864 he became a supplier for the troops stationed in Auckland . The following year he went to Opotiki to open a shipping company between Opotiki and Auckland. In 1868 he became captain of the Bay of Plenty Cavalry Corps and fought in the New Zealand Wars .
Between 1871 and 1875 and from 1887 to 1896 he was a member of the New Zealand House of Representatives .
