Sir William Thomas Knollys (* 1797 ; † 1883 ) was a British general .

Life

The eldest son of the British general of the same name William Knollys (1763-1834) also joined the British Army and immediately fought from 1807 to 1814 in the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula ("Peninsular War"). Even after the peace agreement in 1815, Knollys remained in the army, gained an excellent reputation and served up to general.

In the years 1854 to 1856 he was governor of the Channel Islands ("Anglo Norman Bailiwick of Guernsey"). He was then commander of the Aldershot garrison until 1860 and from 1861 to 1862 vice president of the Council of Military Education.

From 1862 to 1877 he was Comptroller and Treasurer of the Household of the Prince of Wales , later King Edward VII. In 1866 he was promoted to general and in 1867 knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath . After all, Knollys was from 1877 until his death in 1883 Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod as well as Privy Councilor and Colonel of the Scots Guards .
