William Rathbone Greg

William Rathbone Greg (* 1809 in Manchester , † November 15, 1881 in Wimbledon ) was an English writer and social philosopher.

Professional background

William Greg first worked as a cotton spinner in Cheshire . In 1856 he entered the higher civil service in customs and was a member of this until 1877.

In 1836 a son Percy Greg was born , who later also became a writer and wrote science fiction , among other things .

He has contributed widely to the most prestigious reviews and the Pall Mall Gazette . His first independent work of importance was the critical investigation The creed of christendom (8th edition: 1883), whereby he influenced the freer religious movement of the time.

Greg died November 15, 1881 at Wimbledon near London.
