William Rees (2008)

William Rees (born December 18, 1943 ) is a Canadian professor at the University of British Columbia and former director of the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP). He is internationally known for the concept of the ecological footprint , which he developed together with the Swiss Mathis Wackernagel .

His teaching and research focus on politics and planning with regard to global ecological developments and the necessary ecological conditions for sustainable socio-economic development.

Awards

Rees has already received several awards in the context of his scientific work. In 1997 he received the Senior Killam Research Prize for his research achievements . In 2000, The Vancouver Sun named him one of British Columbia's finest "public intellectuals" . In 2006 Rees was elected to the Royal Society of Canada . The following year he was awarded a three-year membership in the prestigious Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
