Mathis Wackernagel

Mathis Wackernagel (born November 10, 1962 in Basel ) is a Swiss thought leader in the field of sustainability . He is president of the organization Global Footprint Network , an international research group in Oakland ( California ).

After studying engineering at the ETH Zurich , Wackernagel obtained a doctorate in urban and regional planning from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada) in 1994 . In the course of his work on the dissertation, he and William Rees developed the concept of the ecological footprint . Since then he has been active in research and teaching worldwide, advising governments and non-governmental organizations and is the author of numerous articles and several books. Above all, he is concerned with the development of possibilities to grasp the limitations of ecological raw materials more tangibly and to draft objectives for sustainable development. In 2007 he received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Science at the University of Bern . In 2010 he was appointed "Frank HT Rhodes Class of 1956" visiting professor at Cornell University (NY) for a three-year term (2011-14) . In 2012 he received the Blue Planet Prize from the Japanese Asahi Glass Foundation.
