Life

Roache, who attended the Waldorf School and later the Methodist Rydal Penrohos School, joined the British Army and was appointed to the Royal Welch Fusiliers Regiment in 1953 . Roache then turned to acting and trained as an actor. He was best known in the UK for his role as Ken Barlow in episode 1 in the British soap opera Coronation Street , which has been running since 1960 . He is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-serving male actor in an ongoing role. In 1999 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards for this role. In 2000, Roache was named an MBE for his artistic pursuits, particularly his longstanding role in Coronation Street .

The actor was married to actress Anna Cropper (1938–2007) from 1961 to 1974. The marriage resulted in two children, the actor Linus Roache and a daughter who died in 2018. In 1978 Roache married Sara McEwan Mottram, a model. His wife died unexpectedly in 2009 at the age of 58. With her, Roache has a daughter, Verity, and another son, James Roache. Both children also work as actors. The couple had one other daughter, who died in 1983 at the age of 18 months.

In 1991, Roache won a libel suit against The Sun magazine , claiming he was hated by the rest of the Coronation Street actors , treated as a laughing stock by the writers, and just as boring and complacent as the character he played on the series . In 2008 his biography was published under the title Soul on the Street .

He was acquitted on a May 2013 charge of rape a minor against the actor.
