William Sanday

William Sanday (born August 1, 1843 in Holme Pierrepont , Nottinghamshire , † September 16, 1920 in Oxford ) was a British Anglican theologian .

Life

William Sanday was a son of William Sanday and Elizabeth Mann. He attended Balliol College of Oxford University , 1863 Bible Students from Corpus Christi and entered 1867 in the church service. In 1877 he married Marian Hastings, daughter of Woodman Hastings. From 1883 to 1895 he worked as a professor of Bible exegesis and from 1895 to 1919 as professor of theology at Oxford. There he was canon of the Christ Church from 1895. He opened the knowledge of continental critical biblical research to Anglican theology. In particular, he researched the gospels and the life of Jesus . He was also one of the editors of the Variorum Bible in 1880 and wrote articles for the Encyclopaedia Biblica and The American Journal of Theology . In 1902 he became a Fellow of the British Academy .
