William Senhouse Kirkes
William Senhouse Kirkes (born January 21, 1822 near Holker at Cartmel , Lancashire , † December 8, 1864 in Marylebone , London ) was an English physiologist .
Career and work
William Senhouse Kirkes was born to Morecroft Kirkes and his wife Anne. He was baptized in Cartmel Parish Church on March 22, 1822 . After attending Cartmel Grammar School , he began training as a surgeon with his mother's relatives in Lancaster at the age of 14 . After five years, he finished his training in 1841 and studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London . The licentiate he graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin . His dissertation dealt with the tenotomy (severing of the tendons). In 1950 he received the LRCP in London.
He worked as a doctor at St Bartholomew's Hospital and as a lecturer at the hospital's medical college. In 1848 he published the Handbook of Physiology - a standard work in physiology. He did research in the field of emboli . Kirkes was the first to recognize the link between high blood pressure and chronic kidney failure.
In 1864, Kirkes died of severe pneumonia after a brief, serious illness . He was married to Caroline (1833–?).
