William Tritton
William Ashbee Tritton (* 1875 in London , † September 24, 1946 in Lincoln ) was a British inventor and engineer . Together with Walter Gordon Wilson, Tritton is considered the inventor of the tank in England.
Life
Tritton attended Christ's College Finchley and King's College London. Tritton was married from 1916.
He developed the Little Willie prototype tank in 1915 . In 1917 he developed the so-called tadpole tail, an extension of the rear part of the tank to improve the ability to cross trenches.
To what extent Tritton can be seen together with Wilson as the inventor of the tank, as is assumed in England, is controversial. In 1911 Gunther Burstyn (Austria-Hungary) designed an armored “motorized gun” with caterpillar tracks and a rotating cannon turret, and Ernest Dunlop Swinton provided a caterpillar tractor with an armored hull in 1914/1915.
