Willibald Filser (born April 18, 1831 in Kaufbeuren ; † January 18, 1895 there ) was a German art dealer, councilor and museum founder.

Life

Willibald Filser was the son of David Ignaz Filser (1787–1831), a painter in Kaufbeuren, and Anna, née Guggemos (1788–1875). The grandfather, Johann Georg Filser, had already practiced the painting trade in Kaufbeuren, and Willibald also completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Kaufbeuren with his stepfather Mathias Männer. The 18-year-old's entry into the Munich Art Academy is documented on April 27, 1849 . In 1855 he received the concession to practice painting and gilding in Kaufbeuren. Together with the painter Josef Räth, he bought a house in 1860, and a few years later he also came into the possession of his parents' house. In 1863 he married the cutlery seller Theresia Miehr from Heidelfing, who died in 1872.

In addition to his painting business - which he left to his partner a few years later - Willibald Filser opened an art shop and the city's first photographic studio. He sold this to the photographer Johann Nepomuk Kreuzer in 1876. In 1869 Willibald Filser acquired citizenship, from 1869 to 1883 he was a member of the community college and subsequently - until his death - Magistrate Council of the city of Kaufbeuren, also a member of the Catholic church administration. As a passionate collector of "antiquities", he initiated the establishment of a municipal "local museum" in Kaufbeuren in 1879, which was opened in 1880. In the "Antiquities Association" founded in 1891 with other citizens of the city, he was the first chairman for many years.

A sum of 10,000 marks that he left behind enabled the establishment of the "Willibald Filser'schen Scholarship Foundation" with the aim of using its annual interest income to support two students from Kaufbeuren.

In 1946 the "Filserweg" in Kaufbeuren was named after Willibald Filser.
