In the place of the church there was already a Romanesque church, which in the first half of the 15th century had to give way to today's building in the Brabant Gothic style. The church burned down in 1468 and was restored to its present form between 1481 and 1535. After the Reformation, the Church fell to the Reformed. During the Napoleonic period the church became a simultaneous church , the choir was separated from the nave and given to the Catholics. The entire Church has been Catholic since 1930 and was founded by Pope Pius XI in 1935 . raised to the minor basilica . The crossing tower was restored as a concrete structure after being destroyed in the war in 1957.
