William Green "Willie" Chalmers (born April 3, 1901 in Aberdeen , † 1997 ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Chalmers from Old Aberdeen played in junior football in an Aberdeen Wednesday league for Aberdeen Tramways Wednesday and was considered the best left winger in his division. In the summer of 1923 he completed a trial training at Aberdeen FC , but turned down the contract offered to him and instead played in the reserve team of the English champions Liverpool FC ; in September 1923 he was signed by Liverpool. Chalmers was considered a very fast and tricky player who was equipped with a powerful shot. The Liverpool Echo correspondent described him as follows in August 1923: “[…] the Scottish boy Chalmers made a deep impression on me. Chalmers does not have the feet of a footballer, because he has splay feet and rarely do you see such a foot appearance come to the top. Chalmers can do it because he's fast, strong, determined and eager, and he hits the ball very hard when he sees a gap. "

Primarily committed to the reserve team, Chalmers came for the first team in the English elite class behind the established Fred Hopkin only in the 1924/25 season to two missions. He ran for the first time in November 1924, when he represented the sick Hopkin in a 2: 5 away defeat against FC Birmingham , from the Athletic News he was rated as a "decent replacement" despite the significant defeat. In his second appearance almost two months later against FC Bury , he stayed in a 4-0 home win in front of 30,000 spectators without a goal participation. At the end of the season he was put on the transfer list by Liverpool and signed in June 1925 by the nearby third division club Tranmere Rovers . Chalmers came for the Rovers in the first half of the season on left winger to 23 league appearances (4 goals) and two FA Cup appearances and formed with Norman Proctor the left attacking side before he was replaced by Bert Cartman .

At the end of the season he returned to Scotland, after a convincing test match appearance for FC St. Johnstone he received a contract with the first division club . At the beginning of the season he ousted the Irish international Joe Toner from the team, but remained limited to five league appearances in a goal win during the season. In early December 1926 Chalmers broke his foot in a reserve game against Aberdeen and could not continue his career afterwards, his contract with St. Johnstone ended in April 1927. In February 1928 he sued for injury against FC St. Johnstone continued earnings under the Workmen's Compensation Act and won justice by the court.
