The Willy-Brandt-Gymnasium , named after the former Federal Chancellor, is located in the center of Oer-Erkenschwick . Since the Willy-Brandt Gymnasium is the only local gymnasium , it has the task of offering a comprehensive teaching concept, so it is not specialized in individual areas.

history

The Willy Brandt Gymnasium (WBG) was founded in 1979 by Heribert Bücker, Heinz Senf, Jürgen Trockel and Jochen Koch. It was initially housed in the current secondary school building. Then the grammar school moved into the Ewaldschule building next to the former indoor swimming pool. In 1981 the WBG relocated again, this time to the building on Christoph-Stöver Strasse, where it can still be found today. It was not until 1994 that the grammar school received its current name, chosen by the students: “Willy-Brandt-Gymnasium”. At the naming ceremony, Peter Brandt, Willy Brandt's eldest son, gave the keynote address. In November 2003 the school got a library with around 900 books. In 2004 the WBG celebrated its 25th anniversary. During the festival week on the occasion of the anniversary, Horst Ehmke, former Minister of the Chancellery under Willy Brandt, was engaged as the keynote speaker.

building

The current old building was completed in 1979, the new building in 2012, whereby the total amount for this extension amounted to approx. 435,000 euros, which was financed by the city with the help of the economic stimulus package II . On approx. 300 m², the new building houses a large exam room, rooms for the level administration and the advisory teachers as well as for the social worker.

School program

The school offers an open all-day school for up to 30 children. Several school trips are offered in the period between eighth grade and high school. In addition to these trips, the school maintains contacts through exchanges lasting several days with Lille / France, Newcastle / England and Oba / Turkey. In 2013, the England exchange can look back on a 20th anniversary.

The school has an orchestra, a brass band, a musical group as well as various choirs and a vocal ensemble. In addition, the school offers various working groups and runs a social program for developing countries over the Christmas period in cooperation with the Lions Club.
