Willy Benz-Baenitz

Willy Benz-Baenitz . also Willy Benz , (* 1881 in Berlin ; † 1957 in Bremen ) was a German painter.

Life

Benz grew up in Berlin. He studied art at the Berlin Art Academy . After completing his studies, he came to Bremen in 1907 and lived in various apartments in the port area. In 1923 he moved to Hafenstrasse 37 (today Faulenstrasse 116). At first it was called Benz and later it was called Benz-Baenitz.

The versatile artist mainly worked as a portrait and history painter . Works such as Impressionist heather and field landscapes as well as still lifes , but also cityscapes such as the view of Stephaniekirchplatz in Bremen from 1931, he made mostly in oil. He also specialized in portrait painting of the Bremen upper class, especially of merchants. With the proceeds from his works, however, he could only lead a modest life. In World War II, his house was bombed and he lost his studio. He still lived on Faulenstrasse until he moved to Mindener Strasse in Bremen- Peterswerder in 1953 .
