Willy Friedrich Burger (born September 1, 1882 in Zurich ; † March 26, 1964 in Rüschlikon ) was a Swiss graphic artist, poster and painter.

Life

Willy Friedrich Burger was the son of the graphic designer and lecturer at the ETH Heinrich Jakob (1849–1917), his mother was Maria Burger, nee. Court.

After an apprenticeship as a lithographer , Burger first attended the arts and crafts school in Zurich, and from 1901 to 1902 he studied at the academy in Karlsruhe . From 1903 to 1905 he worked as a graphic artist in London, later in New York, Philadelphia and Boston and in 1909 in Rome. In 1906 he was awarded a silver medal at an international exhibition in Milan and a gold medal in Brussels in 1910.

In 1913 he returned to Switzerland and settled in Rüschlikon, where he mainly worked as a landscape painter. He also illustrated books and drew.

His work as a poster painter is of great importance in Burger's work. He drew one of his first works for the Pilatusbahn ; 80,000 copies of the poster were printed. This was followed by numerous other orders from all over Switzerland for posters, catalogs, postcards and more. In addition, Burger also worked as an illustrator for books and magazines. Several trips have taken him to Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Palestine and southern France.

Willy Burger was married to May Junot, who died in 1950. Their son Tim was born in 1915.
