Wilma Stockenström

Wilhelmina Johanna "Wilma" Stockenström (born August 7, 1933 in Napier ) is a South African writer, translator and actress. She writes in Afrikaans and has received numerous South African literary awards.

Life

Stockenström was born in Napier, where she also attended high school. She studied at the University of Stellenbosch and earned a Bachelor of Arts in acting in 1952 . She worked as a broadcaster in Cape Town for a year before she married the Estonian philologist Ants Kirsipuu and lived with him in Pretoria , where she mainly worked as a translator. In 1983 JM Coetzee translated her short novel Die kremetartekspedisie , published in 1981, into English under the title The expedition to the baobab tree . The book was also translated into German. Stockenström appeared as an actress in television series such as Die besoeker . Since 1993 she has been living in Cape Town again. In 2003 her husband died.

Stockenström's “literary voice” is described as “satirical, stubborn and compassionate”. Her originality and her unconventional use of the language were praised.
