John Christoffel Kannemeyer

John Christoffel Kannemeyer (born March 31, 1939 in Robertson ; † December 25, 2011 in Stellenbosch ; also JC Kannemeyer ) was a South African , Afrikaans-speaking literary scholar and biographer .

Life

Kannemeyer's parents had no Matric . He was born the second of two brothers.

In 1957 he began to study at the University of Stellenbosch after matric , which he completed in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in Afrikaans and Dutch as well as philosophy . In 1960 he earned a Bachelor of Arts Honors and in 1962 a Master's degree. In 1964 he received his doctorate under the literary scholar DJ Opperman . His doctoral thesis is entitled Die stem in die literêre kunswerk . He made several trips to Europe and worked from 1962 as a lecturer , first at the University of Cape Town . In 1963 he married Beatrix Marianne Boer from the Netherlands. In 1969 he became a senior lecturer at the Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit . In 1973 he married Estelle Strijdom, the daughter of former Prime Minister Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom . The marriage lasted only a few months; In 1974, Kannemeyer married again.

In 1975 Kannemeyer was again a professor at the University of Stellenbosch, he taught Dutch studies. In 1982 he was appointed professor of Afrikaans and Dutch at the Witwatersrand University . In 1984 he married a fourth time. He began to specialize in the biographies of Afrikaans-speaking authors. So he subsequently portrayed his doctoral supervisor as well as CJ Langenhoven , Uys Krige , Jan Rabie and Etienne Leroux, among others . During this time he held various positions at South African universities and institutes, from 1987 to 1992 at the Raad vir Geesteswetenskaplige Navorsing in Pretoria and again at the University of Stellenbosch. Most recently he lived in a senior citizens' residential complex in Stellenbosch.

A few days before his death, he completed his biography of the South African Nobel Prize for Literature, JM Coetzee, which was written in English . He died of a stroke .

Kannemeyer had two sons from his first marriage, one of whom Anton Kannemeyer became known as a comic artist.
