Jan Rabie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Sebastian Rabie (born November 14, 1920 in George , † November 15, 2001 in Onrusrivier ) was a South African writer . He has been referred to as the "father" of the avant-garde movement of the Sestigers who write in Afrikaans .

Life

Rabie grew up in different parts of the Western Cape . In 1937 he enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch and graduated in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in Afrikaans and Dutch . As a student he published his first poems. He then worked as a teacher in Umtata and Knysna . During this time he was a member of the National Party and the right-wing extremist Ossewabrandwag . In 1944 he moved to Johannesburg to work as a writer. He received a doctoral scholarship for a university in Paris . He lived there for seven years and was influenced by Jean-Paul Sartre and the ideas of existentialism . At the same time he turned against apartheid . In Paris he also met the painter Marjorie Wallace, whom he married after his return to South Africa in 1955. They lived in Cape Town , where Rabie worked for the South African Broadcasting Corporation and Die Burger newspaper . In 1956 his first book Een-en-twintig was published, which contains 21 short stories in the style of surrealism and existentialism and thus clearly differed from the previous Afrikaans literature. Rabie became a member of the Sestigers, for whom Een-en-twintig was a role model. In 1966 the couple traveled to the USA, Europe and Israel and then lived in Crete for three years . In 1970 they returned to South Africa and from then on lived in Onrusrivier in what is now Overstrand , where Rabie died in 2001.

Rabie was best known for the five-part novel series Bolandia , in which he represented the Boers and the Coloreds of the historic Cape Colony as a community. He also published short stories, poems, books for young people, travelogues, essays and diaries. He also translated around 40 books into Afrikaans, including Albert Camus' L'Étranger .
