Museum and City Archives

The Wimpelinhof in Markgröningen , Ludwigsburg district , is a splendid three-sided farm in the ruling quarter of the former imperial and official city of Grüningen. The residential building was probably built by Claus Strelin from 1599, the economic building from 1630 by Sebastian Wimpelin. Since the renovation, which was completed in 2005, the residential building has housed the city museum, a wedding room and a poet's apartment; the economic building houses the city archive and an event room.

Building description

The ensemble forms a three-sided courtyard with a covered courtyard entrance from the east. Along the city wall on the west flank, the trapezoidal area measures 33.5 meters, on the south flank around 21 meters, along Wimpelingasse in the east around 30.5 meters and on the north flank around 13.5 meters. The residential building has three full storeys with a two-storey bay window on the northeast corner, the utility building has two full storeys and a window bay in the former summer room . Both main buildings have a basement. There are a total of six entrances, some of which are richly decorated, along the alley. On the first floor of the economic building, the battlements of the city wall have been preserved true to the original. The connecting building in the west has two full floors above the former pig stalls on the ground floor. On the first floor there is a gallery open to the courtyard. The entrance to the courtyard on the eastern flank was subsequently built over with a full storey. The building fabric is of high quality and lavishly designed both inside and out. The half-timbered house is made entirely of oak. The Wimpelinhof is protected as a cultural monument according to § 28 DSchG BW and has a significant role in the inclusion of Markgröningen in the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse .

Building history

Originally the property could have been a manor complex. Before the existing building stock was constructed, the property was in the hands of three owners. The eponymous family Wimpelin still lived in the adjoining property Wimpelingasse 4 to the south, next to the entrance to the courtyard there is the Wimpelin coat of arms with a rising lion and the Gnapper coat of arms with a six-pointed star. The builder of the house was presumably Claus Strelin from 1599 to 1600. Parts of the ground floor come from a previous building. The economic building was built by Sebastian Wimpelin and Katharina Scheyhing around 1630. An inscription above the entrance to the courtyard reminds of this: "16 SV KS 30". In contrast to many other buildings in the city, this newly constructed stately property survived the arson during the siege of Hohenasperg fortress that began in 1634 . Like the neighboring castle , it probably served as quarters for officers of the imperial troops.

In 1671 the courtyard entrance was built over. In its current form, the property was first described in 1705 in the course of taxation: the owner was currently "Licentiatus" Heinrich Halbisch.

In 1992 the city of Markgröningen acquired the property, which had been neglected since the last renovation in 1969, and had it restored as true to the original as possible with the support of the State Monuments Office. An exception was made for the handicapped accessible elevator, which was prescribed for public use and which stands like a foreign object in the courtyard. The architect was Gerhard Schmid from Markgröningen.

use

Museum and poet's apartment

The city museum in the lovingly renovated rooms of the residential building makes bourgeois life in the 17th and 18th centuries "tangible". A wooden model of the town hall and the large cash chest of the Heilig-Geist-Spital can also be viewed. Shepherds' tools, the shepherd's box, the shepherd's flag and shepherd's run plaques are also on display. A media terminal, which can also be used to watch a film on the city's 1200th anniversary, offers more information and reviews of the city's history. The museum, the original parapet walkway section in the utility building and the Upper Gate can be visited on Sundays from April to October between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Brochures and literature on the city's history are on sale in the former shop on the ground floor.

Four rooms in the museum serve as meeting rooms for the municipal council groups and the working group for historical research and monument preservation in Markgröningen (AGD). The writer Claire Beyer lives in a "poet's apartment" set up in the attic above the museum .

City Archives

The store, office and reading room of the city archive are housed in the utility building and in the eastern connecting building. The inventory includes files from city and hospital administration as well as civil estates.

Events

A paneling room with a bay window on the 1st floor of the museum also serves as a wedding room for the registry office. If desired, the infrastructure can also be used for a subsequent champagne reception. The inner courtyard and the former kennel in front of the city wall connected to it by a wall breakthrough can be used for events together with the Katharina-Scheyhing-Saal on the ground floor of the economic building and a kitchen on the ground floor of the residential building. During the shepherd run, the Wimpelinhof is used for the “Café de Jumelage” for the town twinning with Saint-Martin-de-Crau .
