WinCDEmu is a Windows - program , (32 and 64 bit) optical drive to emulate . The program has been developed by the Russian Ivan Shcherbakov since 2008. The source texts are freely available as open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

WinCDEmu supports the following formats in version 3.4: ISO , CUE , IMG , BIN, NRG , MDF / MDS , CCD and RAW formats. WinCDEmu is part of the open source DVD 13.0 and was software tip of the day at Computer Bild on December 23, 2009.

Technical details

Like other emulators this type virtualized also WinCDEmu optical drives (for example, CDs or DVDs ). So-called memory images of the optical media are created beforehand in order to then play them back from the hard disk in a virtual drive . WinCDEmu can create such images itself. After installing WinCDEmu, it is sufficient to double-click a file in one of the supported formats in order to “ mount ” it as a virtual drive , that is to say to be able to address it as a drive with a letter. In order to eject CD / DVD images again, you do not need a system tray program; you just need to double-click the relevant file again, or right-click on the corresponding drive and press the eject function.

The virtual drive is integrated into the operating system in such a way that it appears as if there is an additional drive in the computer used. For the user, it does not differ from physical drives in terms of operation. This can save electricity, especially with notebooks, because the hard disk on which the virtual drive is located consumes less electricity than a DVD drive.

Testing

Chip.de judges: "WinCDEmu is probably the easiest way to mount and execute an image file." Jon L. Jacobi from the American computer magazine PC World said that the software received his highest praise that he used the software after Use test on its main systems as well. "As a matter of fact, WinCDEmu has received the highest form of praise I can dole out - it's made the leap from my VMs and test bed onto my main systems."
