Wincenty Urban (born February 13, 1911 in Grodzisko Dolne , † December 13, 1983 in Breslau ) was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Gniezno and vicar capitular of Breslau .

Life

After graduating from high school, Wincenty Urban studied theology at the University of Lemberg and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Lemberg , where he then worked as a chaplain . After he had to leave his homeland in eastern Poland as a result of the Second World War , he initially worked as a pastor in the Opole region. In 1947 he was able to complete his doctorate, which was interrupted by the war, and later became director of the archive, the library and the museum of the Archdiocese of Wroclaw. In 1953 he qualified as a professor at the theological faculty of the Kraków University with a thesis on the Breslau bishop Leopold von Sedlnitzky . He then taught church history, patrology and art history at the Catholic University in Wroclaw .

In 1952 he was appointed titular bishop of Abitinae and in 1959 auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Gniezno.

Since the Polish communist authorities did not accept any of the successors proposed by the church after the death of Archbishop Bolesław Kominek , Wincenty Urban served as vicar capitular of the Archdiocese of Wroclaw from 1974 to 1976, where he also served as auxiliary bishop .
