Dalbergplatz with the bride of the wind

The bride of the wind is a steel sculpture by the sculptor ER Nele on Dalbergplatz, which was redesigned in 2007 in Frankfurt-Höchst . The work of art was procured for the design of the square on behalf of the city of Frankfurt am Main and installed on April 4, 2008.

The sculpture

The bride of the wind is made of polished stainless steel . It is 5.10 meters high and weighs 900 kilograms. The anchoring was done with fourteen 20 centimeter long special dowels. The statics of the Windsbraut were designed for wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour.

The base of the Windbraut consists of two slightly curved pieces of steel that are offset from one another and connected with a cross member. The top of the sculpture is rotatably mounted on a ball and can be moved by the wind. It consists of two parts, an angular spiral that bulges slightly and a floating stylized female figure. Both parts balance each other out in the wind.

The work of art is to serve as an eye-catcher and “gatekeeper” on Dalbergplatz as the entrance gate to Höchst and bring about an optical upgrade of the district. The material is to correspond with the neighboring, also made of steel, railway overpass of the Taunusbahn .

Financial discussion about the property

After the redesign of Dalbergplatz in 2007, the cultural office of the city of Frankfurt presented the plans to buy the Windsbraut at a meeting of local advisory council 6 in September 2007 in order to make the square representative. A purchase price of around 50,000 euros was named, but this subsequently turned out to be too low. Shortly after the local advisory board meeting, a procurement price of almost 120,000 euros was named.

While the plan to design the square with this sculpture was approved by the local council, a controversy arose over the financing of the object. The local council feared that the money would be taken from the funds provided for in the district development plan for Höchst and that other projects would be missing. The city agreed to look for a sponsor for the bride of the wind . Ultimately, the costs, named 118,000 euros, were paid for from the budget “More beautiful Frankfurt”, which is available for the design of streets and squares and is financed from sponsorship funds.
