Johnny Winston Méndez Montero (born November 20, 1974 in Santo Domingo ) is a Dominican boxer . He fights at light flyweight (up to 48 kg).

Career

Internationally, Montero first appeared in 1999 when he advanced to the quarter-finals of the Pan American Games, but had to admit defeat to Puerto Rican Iván Calderón . He then disappeared from the international scene for many years and made his comeback when he won a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games . Here he beat the Colombian Oscar Negrete and lost in the semi-finals to the American Luis Yáñez .

At the World Championships that took place in the same year , he had to admit defeat to the Japanese Kenji Ohkubo in the first fight . This prompted the Dominican Boxing Association to nominate another athlete for the 1st qualifying tournament in North and South America for the 2008 Olympic Games . But even this was unsuccessful, so that Montero got a second chance from the association at the 2nd qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games. He used this and fought his way up to the final, in which he clearly lost on points against the Brazilian Paulo Carvalho . He qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games, making him one of the oldest boxers at this Olympic tournament.
