The Winston Western 500 was a race in the NASCAR Winston Cup , which took place from 1958 to 1987 at the Riverside International Raceway . From 1965 to 1981 it was held in January at the beginning of the season and from 1981 to 1987 in November towards the end of the season. In 1981, when the date was postponed to November, two races called the "Winston Western 500" took place. The racing distance was 500 miles until 1977 before it was shortened to 311 miles. It was the second race on the Riverside International Raceway alongside the Budweiser 400 .
